Douglas H. Schulte, 55, a teacher for students with learning disabilities at Beech Tree Elementary School in Falls Church from 1991 until his retirement this year, died October 8, 2008, at Capital Hospice in Arlington, Virginia. He had metastatic melanoma.
Mr. Schulte, an Arlington resident, started teaching in Fairfax County in 1981, first at Lanier Middle School and then at Wakefield Forest Elementary.
He worked part time as a customer service supervisor for the Whole Foods Market in Arlington from 1996 to 2006 and as a sales representative at the old Woodward and Lothrop department store in Falls Church from 1985 to 1995.
Douglas Howard Schulte was born in Estherville, Iowa. He received his education in Windom, Mt. Lake, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Albuquerque, New Mexico public schools; graduating from Albuquerque in the the Class of 1973. He then furthered his education and received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Iowa in 1977 and a master's degree in special education from the University of Kansas in 1981. He also earned his elementary principal certification from the University of Virginia in 1988.
Doug was a member of the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers and served as a building representative for the organization from 1991 to 2008.
Survivors include his mother and step-father, Delores M. and Lee C. Cook of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and one brother, Gregory A. Schulte of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Doug is preceded in death by his father, Howard W. Schulte who died in November of 1958 in Fenton, Iowa; grandparents, Simon and Francis Kipfer.
