After being discharged, Lester returned to his home area. It was there that he met and later married Iris Kay Carter at Faith Lutheran Church near Comfrey, MN on November 12, 1947. For several years he worked in the sign department of the Minnesota Department of Transportation office in Windom. Lester and Iris have lived in Windom since 2000.

As an honorably discharged veteran, Lester was a devoted member of the honor guard of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts. As a former P.O.W., Lester humbly accepted several news articles and recognition for his devotion to duty. For many years, Lester and Iris have been members of American Lutheran Church in Windom. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Lester loved animals and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
