Lester E. Knudson

Lester Eugene Knudson was born December 24, 1921 in Butterfield, MN to Marshall and Clara Jensen Knudson. He grew up in the area where he received his education. As a young man, Lester served his country in World War II in the Army Air Corps. He served with distinction as a waist gunner as a B-17 crewman. After surviving being shot down in action, Lester endured a year and a half as a P.O.W. and was finally released to freedom.

After being discharged, Lester returned to his home area. It was there that he met and later married Iris Kay Carter at Faith Lutheran Church near Comfrey, MN on November 12, 1947. To this family, 6 children were born. They farmed in the area until 1953 when they moved to the Windom area. For several years he worked in the sign department of the Minnesota Department of Transportation office in Windom. Lester and Iris have lived in Windom since 2000.

As an honorably discharged veteran, Lester was a devoted member of the honor guard of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts. As a former P.O.W., Lester humbly accepted several news articles and recognition for his devotion to duty. For many years, Lester and Iris have been members of American Lutheran Church in Windom. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Lester loved animals and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
