Lester E. Knudson

December 24, 1921 - January 24, 2009
Lester Eugene Knudson was born December 24, 1921 in Butterfield, MN to Marshall and Clara Jensen Knudson. He grew up in the area where he received his education. As a young man, Lester served his country in World War II in the Army Air Corps. He served with distinction as a waist gunner as a B-17 crewman. After surviving being shot down in action, Lester endured a year and a half as a P.O.W. and was finally released to freedom.

After being discharged, Lester returned to his home area. It was there that he met and later married Iris Kay Carter at Faith Lutheran Church near Comfrey, MN on November 12, 1947. To this family, 6 children were born. They farmed in the area until 1953 when they moved to the Windom area. For several years he worked in the sign department of the Minnesota Department of Transportation office in Windom. Lester and Iris have lived in Windom since 2000.

As an honorably discharged veteran, Lester was a devoted member of the honor guard of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts. As a former P.O.W., Lester humbly accepted several news articles and recognition for his devotion to duty. For many years, Lester and Iris have been members of American Lutheran Church in Windom. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Lester loved animals and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. He died at the Fairmont Hospital at the age of 87 years on Saturday evening, January 24, 2009, after having broken his hip.

His family includes his wife, Iris; five children and their spouses, Diane and Dan Degner of Gilmore City, IA, Lee and Cheryl Knudson of Windom, Faith and Duane Switzer and Rick Knudson, all of Shakopee, MN, and Lori Knudson of Windom; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael, 1 brother, Clyde, and 4 sisters, Evelyn Holland, Florence Dodge, Ethel Hillesheim, and Mabel Meyer. He was also preceded in death by Iris' parents, Pete and Ann Carter.

Iris, Diane and family, I was sorry to read about Les passing away. I remember Les and Iris as a fun-loving couple who always were ready for a good time with friends and family. Diane, my sincere sympathy to you and your family. As your former roommate many, many years ago, you are thought of often and would like to touch base with you once again. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Darlene Hanish (Zip Pommier)
