Robert Wallace

Madison-Robert Wallace peacefully passed away with his family at his side on February 9, 2012. Robert was born in Leavenworth, Kan. on May 21, 1920 to Anna and Joseph Wallace. He was the third of four children. Robert proudly served in the Colored Conservation Corp. and later attended Boston College for two years. He began his army career in the horse mounted 10th cavalry known as the "Buffalo Soldiers". Robert was the last surviving Buffalo Soldier in the State of Wisconsin. He also served in the first black tank battalion. After serving in World War II and the Korean War, he retired in 1966 as a Master Sergeant with 27 years of service. In 1967 he moved his family to Madison, WI where he worked with the U. S. Post Office. He began as a mail clerk and ended his 33 year career as a mail room supervisor. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Maxine C. Wallace, daughter Catherine Gooch, sons Wayne Bradford and Robert D. Wallace, daughter in law Amy Jo Wallace, and granddaughters, Savannah, Makenzie, and Grace Wallace. h Madison Coalition and Stoughton Hospital for their exceptional care, Rev. Thomas Flint and the members of St. Paul's AME Methodist Church for their faithful visits, love and support when he could no longer attend service. A very special thank you to the staff at the Avalon Assisted Living Facility who graciously provided a loving home for Robert during his brief stay until his death and also to Agrace Hospice for their care and support. Services will be held at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road on Feb. 18, 2012 with visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Agrace HospiceCare, Inc. or The Madison Community Foundation Mann Scholarship Fund.
